This guy is truly cute.
He (or she) is a Western Painted Turtle and you can see why they have their name. Some are red and others are yellow. I haven't found anything to tell me if color is related to gender.
I did, however, discover that (a) females are larger than males; and, (b) females mate with a variety of males so that the offspring of any given clutch laid by a female could have multiple fathers. I suspect we're watching some slo-mo turtle action right here.
